"Norm" Your Grades
One way to ensure that the grades you’re assigning are reasonable (and to reign in elevated grading), is to ensure that the grades across TA sections in any give course are uniform. And one way to make certain of this is to normalize, or “norm,” your grades with the faculty instructor and/or the other TAs. Usually each instructor selects samples of student writing that represent a range of success with the assignment: a few good, mediocre, and poor ones. The group reads the essays and discusses whether everyone is grading fairly and similarly.
