ESL and Multilingual Writers

A student’s writing that exhibits some English as a Second Language (ESL) features, such as article misuse, may still communicate its main points perfectly well. If, however, problems in grammar, word use, or syntax interfere with the reader’s ability to understand the writing, begin by pointing out these patterns to the student. Then meet with the student yourself and/or refer him or her to an ESL tutor at Covel Commons (see Using UCLA’s Tutorial Services).
